形態特徵

An evergreen tree.
Leaves irregularly whorled, chartaceous, oblong, lanceolate to oblanceolate, the apex shortly acuminate, with obtuse acumen, the base cuneate or obtuse, 8–13 cm long, 3–6 cm broad, tubercled beneath, the margins crenulate-serrulate towards the upper part, the lateral veins 6–8 on each side of the midrib, arcuate-ascending, the veinlets reticulate; petioles 1.2–2 cm long, glabrous.
Inflorescences racemose, axillary or above the scar of the fallen leaves, 4–6 cm long; pedicels 3–6 mm long, slender, pubescent; flower-buds ovate, 4 mm long; sepals 5, lanceolate, 5–6 mm long, 1.5–2 mm broad, acute at the apex, depressed pubescent outside; petals 5, cut about half way down into numerous laciniae, 6–7 mm long, about 2.5 mm broad, slightly pubescent at base; stamens about 28, the anthers linear, 3 mm long, puberulent, with hair-tuft at apex, the outer valves slightly longer than inner ones, acute; ovary ovoid, villous, 4–5-celled, the style about 3 mm long.
Fruit subglobose, about 2 cm long, 1.5 cm across, the stone strongly tuberculate, very hard.
E. hayatae and E. sphaericus are similar to each other in having chartaceous leaves, anthers with hair-tuft at the top, subglobose fruits and other characters. The difference between the two is that in the former there is no pubescence on the stems, petioles and underside of leaves. Kanehira and Sasaki (1934) noted in the original description that the ovary of E. hayatae is 3-celled. However, in examining type specimens, it is found that the ovary and fruit are 4–5-celled.
